Hunter flying has it all...! The history of this aircraft is in the experience of flying in it. The one-time World air-speed record holder has a cockpit that any pilot from any epoch of the first century of flight would be at home in. The uninitiated would it surprising that the instrument panel is not up to the aesthetics of a modern car but it looks like a Spitfire layout.
Engine starting and running noises are lost under the aviator's helmet but the concise, essentials of the RT and the pilot's advices keep the passenger well ahead of the action.
There is a thrill every moment, from engine start-up, the race down the runway, the surprising rate of climb, seeing the Western Approaches from thousands of feet, and landmarks at all angles as aerobatics ensue. There is no discomfort at all in the aerobatics - everyone can take the mild 'g' forces of wide loops, barrel rolls and Hunter rolls - only sheer exhilaration.
It was all so professional but the pilot had more hours on type than was imaginable. I wanted to do it all again when we arrived back at dispersal.
Thanks, and please give my very best to Brian,
Yours sincerely, David Doyle.
